AI recommends businesses with fresh pages — what 216,000 pages show

A study of 216,000 pages across 129,000 domains found content updated in the last three months earns noticeably more ChatGPT citations than content left to go stale. It's one of the few AI-visibility actions with real evidence behind it.

Most advice about "getting cited by AI" is either recycled SEO folklore or a guess dressed up as a strategy. One finding, though, keeps showing up in independent research with a consistent, sizeable effect: how recently a page was updated.

SE Ranking, an SEO analytics platform, analysed 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages across 20 different niches to work out which factors actually correlate with getting cited by ChatGPT. Of the twenty factors they measured, content freshness produced one of the clearest results in the whole study.

The headline number. Pages updated within the last three months averaged 6 ChatGPT citations. Pages that hadn't been updated recently averaged 3.6, meaning the freshly-updated pages were cited roughly two-thirds more often. Across a study of this size, that's a real and repeatable gap, not noise.

The data

What else the study found

Freshness didn't operate alone. The strongest single predictor in the whole dataset was backlink diversity: sites with over 350,000 referring domains averaged 8.4 citations versus 1.6 to 1.8 for sites with under 2,500. Domain-level trust scores showed a similar pattern. Content depth mattered too, articles over 2,900 words averaged 5.1 citations versus 3.2 for pieces under 800 words, and pages with 19 or more concrete data points averaged 5.4 versus 2.8 for pages with little data.

Word count >2,9005.1 citations3.2 (<800 words)

A few findings cut against common advice. Pages with FAQ schema markup actually averaged fewer citations than pages without (3.6 vs 4.2), and llms.txt files showed negligible impact on citations, both consistent with what other studies in this space have found. Heavily keyword-optimised titles and URLs also underperformed plainer, topic-describing ones.

Why freshness is the practical one

Backlink diversity and domain trust take years to build and are largely outside a small local business's control. Content freshness is different: it's something you can act on directly, this month, without needing 350,000 referring domains or a decade of authority. That's what makes it one of the few evidence-backed levers actually available to a local business rather than a national brand.

What this means for your business

Update your key pages roughly every 90 days

You don't need to rewrite your whole site every quarter. The practical version of this finding is: identify the handful of pages that matter most, your homepage, your core service pages, maybe a location page, and make sure each one gets a genuine update at least every three months. That could be new service details, updated pricing, a fresh example or case study, or simply confirming the facts are still current and re-publishing with an updated date. The keyword is genuine: a token change purely to reset a timestamp is unlikely to carry the same signal as content that's actually been kept current.

This is also one of the few AI-visibility actions that's fully within a small business's control and costs nothing but time. You can't manufacture 350,000 backlinks. You can decide to open your homepage every quarter and update it.

Limits of this study

SE Ranking analysed ChatGPT citations specifically; other AI systems (Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude) may weight freshness differently, and the study doesn't claim otherwise. SE Ranking doesn't specify exactly which ChatGPT version or precise date range the underlying data covers, so treat these as directional correlations rather than a guarantee of how any single citation decision gets made. Correlation across 216,000 pages is strong evidence a relationship exists, but the researchers themselves note that the twenty factors are interdependent, freshness alone, on a page with no other authority signals, won't manufacture citations out of nothing.
